CD REVIEWS
John Hallam and Jeff Barnhart/Alone Together (Lake LACD272)
With John on clarinet, tenor and baritone saxes and Jeff on piano and vocals this, their third Lake album, is another nicely varied CD. I rather liked their versions of Alone Together and Black Butterfly although I’m less keen on the vocals. They’ll be at Darlington Arts Centre, on May 2.
The Lake Records All-Star Jazz Band/The Rosehill Concert (Lake LACD270)
As part of Lake’s 25th anniversary programme, label owner Paul Adams has issued this session by his All-Stars, a group of like-minded musicians who perform each year at Keswick and other festivals. For this 2008 gathering, the line up featured John Hallam clarinet and saxophone, Ian Bateman trombone, Gordon Whitworth and/or special guest Duke Heitger trumpet and a rhythm section of Jeff Barnhart, Roy Cansdale, Keith Stephen and Paul himself on drums. A relaxed and enjoyable concert which is nicely caught on this double CD. Blowing Our Own Trumpet, a promotional CD celebrating 25 years of Lake Records is free with orders from Lake at fellside.com or by calling0190-061556.
