IF you're into singer/songwriters then the place to be on October 17 is The Sage, Gateshead.

John Prine, a composing legend, plays a one-off date, one of only three dates he is playing in England.

In his own right, Prine has many commendable solo albums to his credit but has never had many of the accolades he deserves.

Over the years he has flirted with almost every genre from folk to rockabilly and pure country.

Apparently, it was Kris Kristofferson who played an instrumental part in Prine's career by getting him his first record contract and was so influenced by Prine's writing ability that he composed Jesus Was A Capricorn (Ode to John Prine).

Prine's songs have been recorded by artists such as Tammy Wynette, Jack Clement, Tanya Tucker, Lynn Anderson and Johnny Cash.

In the 80s and 90s he received Grammy nominations and his critically acclaimed album of 1991, Missing Years, brought his recording career back to life when he was joined by notables like Bonnie Raitt, Tom Petty and Bruce Springsteen.

The latter, unfortunately, will not accompany him to The Sage. They will not be needed as the man and his music can stand alone.
