CD REVIEWS: Paul Chambers/Bass on Top (Blue Note 93182) When this was recorded in 1957 Paul Chambers was undoubtedly one of the top bass players. On this third Blue Note outing his solos, both plucked and bowed, are supported by guitarist Kenny Burrell and pianist Hank Jones with admirably tasteful drumming from Art Taylor.
Ike Quebec/Bossa Nova Soul Samba (Blue Note 92783) As the title suggests this is a slightly funkier bossa nova and I enjoyed it very much. It was the tenor player's last recording and he gets perfect backing from Kenny Burrell in particular and the subtle rhythm team of Wendell Marshall, Willie Bobo and Garvin Masseaux.
Walter Davis Jr/Davis Cup (Blue Note 92766) The pianist's only Blue Note album as leader is simply brilliant. He's in fast company with Donald Byrd trumpet and Jackie McLean alto sax plus Sam Jones and A.T. again providing the rhythmic impulse. A well-paced set of Davis' own compositions.
