CD REVIEWS: Stacey Kent/Breakfast on the Morning Tram (Blue Note) A new approach here for the singer on her new record label. Not in the singing, but in the material which is broader than before with four new songs written by novelist Kazuo Ishiguro and husband Jim Tomlinson, three French chansons and just three by American writers - the delightful Never Let Me Go, and more surprisingly, What A Wonderful World and Hard Hearted Hannah.
The new works, and the mix, are more challenging but I'm sure Stacey and her fans are ready for it. Available October 1.
Maxine Sullivan/It's wonderful (Properbox 130) Proper have previously issued a one-CD Introduction to Maxine, one of the most tuneful and lilting singers.
This 4-CD set displaces that with a wonderful selection covering her earlier recordings at length plus some delightful sessions from the mid '50s when her career was revived. Detailed notes, period photos and the usual bargain price.
