OR Hitchcock's Rear Window for hitech young cinemagoers.

Shia LaBeouf, fresh from fighting alien robots in Transformers, stars as troubled teen Kale, who blames himself for his dad's death and punches his Spanish teacher for making an inappropriate remark concerning his late father.

The judge sentences him to three months house arrest, his confinement ensured by an electronic ankle tag. After his exasperated mum (Carrie-Anne Moss) cuts the plug off the TV set, he's forced to make his own amusement by spying on the neighbours. Much time is spent training his binoculars and movie camera at the young girl next door Ashley (Sarah Roemer) as she swims in the pool or disrobes in her room.

Playing at being peeping Tom take a more sinister turn when he comes to believe that neighbour Mr Turner (David Morse) is the serial killer getting so much publicity in the media.

As his tag prevents him from leaving the house, he enlists the help of Ashley and friend Ronnie (Aaron Yoo) in breaking into Mr Turner's home and investigating the bloody bundle he's storing in the garage.

Director D J Caruso delivers the required jolts and shocks to the system, although taking ten minutes or so off the running time would rack up the tension even more. LaBeouf - currently filming the fourth Indiana Jones adventure - shows himself more than capable of carrying the film as Kale tries to get someone to believe his story about the killer next door. And if you thought Morse was scary as the cop obsessed with bringing Dr House to book in the TV series, wait until you see him here.
