REVIEWS: Haydn Symphonies 88-92, Simon Rattle 2CDs (EMI Classics 3942372) Simon Rattle conducting the Berlin Philharmonic presents an exuberant take on Haydn symphonies, written in 1788 and 1789. Rattle has put his own stamp on the work, picking out the fine detail with Élan. These recordings taken from concerts in February this year include the Sinfonia Concertante for oboe, bassoon, violin and cello. Inspired music-making.
Cherubini: Missa Solemnis in E (EMI 3943162) Cherubini exponent Riccardo Muti, conducting the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, gives a rousing rendition of the neglected Italian composer's Miss Solemnis. The sweeping grandeur of the work is underpinned by sterling performances from soloists Ruth Ziesak, Marianna Pizzolato, Herbert Lippert and Ildar Abdrazakov.
Tuur: Symphony No 4 (EMI 3857852) The Estonian composer Erkki-Sven Tuur, began his career as a rock artist before turning his hand to contemporary compositions. This is dedicated to Scottish virtuoso percussionist Evelyn Glennie. A driving half-hour of relentless rhythm gets the heart pounding. Other works include Inquietude du fini for a chamber choir and orchestra and The Path and Traces for strings, dedicated to compatriot and composer Arvo Part. Rewarding listening.
