FOR many the voice' of country has been defined as that of George Jones. However, if I had to vote in a poll, I would have to opt instead for Merle Haggard.
It was great news for me to hear that a new six-CD set is to be released this month featuring Haggard entited Hag-The Studio Recordings 1969-1976.
The CDs feature 165 recordings including 15 number one hits and more than 20 unreleased performances.
All tracks are taken from his time with the Capitol record label, though not included is his Jimmy Rodgers' tribute offering Same Train, Different Time.
Ironically, his one-time wife, Bonnie Owens, who also appeared on many of his recordings, is also releasing a four-CD collection, entitled Queen Of The Coast.
The so-called Queen of Bakersfield, who was also married to Buck Owens, offers 103 recordings from 1953 through to 1971.
It is good to see Bear Family Records giving her the recognition she deserves. Both CD sets come with hardcover books, featuring rare photographs, biographical and recording information and discographies.
Both releases are imports available from Rollercoaster Records, Rock House, London Road, St.Marys. Stroud, Glo, GL6 8PU or phone: 01453-886252. email: info@rollercoasterrecords.com
