CD REVIEW: John Hallam & Jeff Barnhart/Mr. Fine & Mr. Dandy (Lake LACD248)
Last week I reviewed a very enjoyable CD featuring saxophonist and clarinettist John Hallam accompanied by Keith Stephens and Bruce Rollo. Here they are again with Jeff Barnhart recorded last April in Whitehaven on another entertaining and varied CD by "the Mister Men" of jazz.
Nice versions of Coffee Grinder and Petite Fleur among others in a delightful programme. Available from September 10.
Enrico Pieranunzi/Don't forget the poet (Challenge CHR70065)
Top Italian pianist Enrico Pieranunzi leads a beautifully balanced and integrated quintet on a selection of his own attractive compositions.
Although probably unfamiliar names to many, this is an outstanding group with Bert Joris on trumpet, Stefano d'Anna saxes, Hans van Oosterhout drums and Hein Van de Geyn on bass.
Joe Zawinul/Brown Street (Intuition INT3450-2)
A double CD of original Weather Report tunes adapted by Vince Mendoza for Joe and the WDR Big Band in a lively set recorded at Joe Zawinul's Birdland, Vienna.
