CD REVIEWS: Keith Stephens with John Hallam/La Vie en Rose (KS Records KSHCT002) Another little gem from the guitarist's Hot Club Trio with Roly Veitch on rhythm guitar and Bruce Rollo bass. This time there's the considerable bonus of John Hallam's clarinet and saxophone on several tracks, and some pleasing vocals from Caroline Irwine and Roly. Paul Booth/No looking back (Basho Music SRCD20-2) Just a couple of backward glances with Come Sunday which segues neatly into Better Get It In Your Soul, otherwise this is forward looking stuff written by Paul and featuring him mostly on saxes with Stuart McCallum guitar, Mike Gorman piano, Phil Donkin bass and Dave Smith drums. Paul was impressive recently with Arnie Somogyi's Ambulance in Gateshead and it's good to hear his new band is up to the same standard.
Tim Lapthorn/Seventh Sense (Basho SRCD19-2) An absolutely delightful album, beautifully played and clearly recorded. With perfect support from Arnie Somogyi on bass and Steve Keogh drums, the pianist also offers a lovely programme ranging from Skylark to Bright Mississippi and three of his own compositions.
