REVIEWS: Stanford: Clarinet Sonata etc (Naxos 8.570416) Sir Charles Stanford, one of the most significant British composers to have emerged immediately before Elgar, is remembered mainly for his Irish Rhapsodies and Seven Symphonies.
He composed many chamber works, including several for clarinet. This fascinating disc, featuring the Gould Piano Trio, includes his Clarinet Sonata and Fantasy No 2 for Clarinet and String Quartet, and showcases the talents of acclaimed clarinettist Robert Plane.
Ole Edvard Antonsen Plays Nordic Trumpet Concertos (BIS-1548) Trumpet player Antonsen appears in a programme of modern Nordic trumpet concertos from between 1987 and 2005. Relatively unknown composers are introduced such as Harri Wessman, Britta Bystrom and Alfred Janson. Antonsen is backed by The Nordic Chamber Orchestra under the baton of Christian Lindberg.
Martinu's Complete Piano Music Vol 3 (Naxos 8.557919) This album represents the most mature of Martinu's work and includes his two masterpieces for the genre: the Fantaisie et toccata, written as he made his escape from Paris in 1940; and the solitary Sonata, his largest and last major work for solo piano.
In brilliant performances, pianist Giorgio Koukl gets under the skin of the scores.
