Purcell: Phantasies, Ayres & Chaconys, The Flautadors (Deux-Elles DXL1123) The Flautadors recorder quartet joins with lutenist David Miller to explore the works of British composers, Henry Purcell and Matthew Locke. Purcell used the recorder in many songs, odes, symphonies and in some of his greatest dramatic works. While the recorder quartet did not feature then, the instrument was among the musical forces used. With much of the theatre music appearing in four-part score, it transfers easily. The album includes Purcell's Chaconne from King Arthur.

Superb performances.

Klemperer: Beethoven, Brahms Mahler (Medici Masters MM005-2) This new label continues its excellent releases of historic recordings with Klemperer conducting the WDR Symphony Orchestra of Cologne in 1955. This CD features Beethoven's Egmont Overture and a gripping rendition of Brahms' Symphony No 1. Baritone George London gives a sensitive performance of Mahler's Kindertotenlieder.

Amadeus Quartet: Mozart, Beethoven (MM007-2) The Amadeus Quartet, formed in 1947 and only disbanded in 1987 at the death of its violist Peter Schidlof, was famous for its seamless ensemble playing and exquisite interpretations. This album captures 1956 recordings of Mozart's String Quartet No 18 and Beethoven's String Quartet No 12. Compelling listening.
