REVIEWS: Robert Schumann (Naxos 8.573399) The prize-winning young pianist Boris Giltburg joins the roster of Naxos artists. His debut album comprises an all-Schumann programme. Davidsbündlertänze was written after Schumann’s engagement to Clara Wieck, to whom he wrote, “If I have ever been happy at the piano, it was when I was composing these”. Papillons is a youthful work, while Carnaval is one of his most popular pieces. Impeccable performances that come highly recommended.
Saint-Saens: Symphonies 1 & 2 (Naxos 8.573138) The Malmo Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Marc Soustrot embark on a series of the Saint-Saens symphonies. This album features the First Symphony Saint-Saens, completed at the age of 17, the elegant Second Symphony and the dynamic symphonic poem Phaeton. A must for devotees.
NielsenL Symphonies 5 & 6) (Dacapo 6220625) The New York Philharmonic, conducted by Alan Gilbert, conclude the acclaimed cycle of Carl Nielsen symphonies. Recorded live in Avery Fisher Hall, in October 2014. A boxset featuring all the symphonies and concertos of Nielsen is released in June to mark the composer's 150th anniversary.
