REVIEWS: Hans Gal: Orchestra of the Swan (Avie AV2322) Kenneth Woods and the Orchestra of the Swan made musical history when they completed the first recorded cycle of the symphonies by the Austrian émigré Hans Gal. Recordings of the revelatory cycle, originally released alongside Robert Schumann’s symphonies, have been remastered and presented together for the first time. These highly original works are lyrical and energetic. Well worth discovering.
Mozart: Complete Violin Concertos (Avie AV2317) Rachel Barton Pine is joined by the Academy of St Martin the in Fields, under the baton of Sir Neville Marriner, in thrilling renditions of the five Mozart Violin Concertos. The CD marks the recording debut of violist Matthew Lipman, who joins her in the Sinfonia Concertante.
JS Bach: Concertos for Oboe and Oboe d’amore (Avie AV2324) Leading period instrument exponent Gonzalo X Ruiz is joined by Monica Huggett with a recording of concertos commonly heard on keyboard. His own adaptations for oboe and oboe d’amore are delivered with buoyancy and a keen sense of momentum.
