REVIEWS: Liszt: Angela Hewitt (Hyperion CDA68067) Pianist Angela Hewitt has a close affinity to music of Liszt Piano Sonata in B minor which played a part in honing her technique and helped her win a number of competitions a young performer. In this album she fulfils her dream of recording it, placing fresh light on the work. The programme is completed by the second half of Liszt’s dazzling second Annee de pelerinage collection: the three Petrarch Sonnets and the noble Dante Sonata. Highly recommended.
Scriabin: Complete Poems, Garrick Ohlsson (Hyperion CDA67088) Alexander Scriabin produced a steady torrent of miniatures between writing monumental pieces. American pianist Garrick Ohlsson gives an insight into the composer’s inner world in scintillating accounts of these varied Poems which were written over decade.
Esenvalds: Northern Lights & other choral works (CDA68083) The Trinity College Choir Cambridge under the direction of Stephen Layton give superlative performances of varied and engaging choral works by the Latvian composer ?riks Ešenvalds. Contemporary music making at its best.
