REVIEWS: Shostakovich Symphonies No 6 &14 (LPOLive-0080) The London Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Vladimir Jurowski, continue with their Shostakovich symphony cycle with Nos 6 and 14. The latter, Jurowski’s first Shostakovich symphony with the LPO, features sterling performances from soprano Tatiana Monogarova and baritone Sergei Leiferkus (baritone). Magnificent accounts that come highly recommended.
Strauss: Don Juan & Ein Heldenleben (LPOLive0079) As the London Philharmonic Orchestra’s Principal Conductor from 1967–79, Bernard Haitink has a long association on record with the music of Richard Strauss. This album features Ein Heldenleben, recorded live at London’s Royal Festival Hall in 1986 and Don Juan recorded in 1992. It is dedicated to the memory of Nicholas Busch, the orchestra’s principal horn from 1973–2006, who features prominently in these works, vividly evoking the hero of Ein Heldenleben. A must.
Schubert: Die schone Mullerin (WHLive0072) Marking 20 years since the death of legendary accompanist Geoffrey Parsons, this archive release of Schubert’s Die schöne Müllerin, recorded in 1994, features Austrian baritone Wolfgang Holzmair. A fitting tribute.
