CD Reviews: Keith Jarrett/Charlie Haden/Paul Motian – Hamburg ‘72 (ECM 470 4256) So much great music may be remembered only by those who were there and Hamburg on June 14, 1972, was one such occasion when this hyper-sensitive group played as one. Now, for the first time, we can all share the experience on a finely remastered set which includes Everything That Lives Laments, Piece for Ornette and Jarrett’s only recording of Haden’s Song for Che. ecmrecords.com
Phil Woods/Three Classic Albums (Avid AMSC1146) This second collection of Woods’ albums centres on his sparkling duets with fellow alto player Gene Quill. They’re featured in quintets on Phil Talks with Quill, Phil & Quill on Prestige and in a sextet with Sol Schlinger’s baritone. Finally, on Four Altos, they’re joined by Hal Stein and Sahib Shihab on a consistently entertaining and generously filled 2-CD set.
Yusef Lateef/Four Classic Albums (Avid AMSC1147) Although recorded as long ago as 1957/1960 three of the original LPs were quite new to me. I’m familiar with many of his key recordings and it’s wonderful to discover more by this remarkable musician. He’s extensively featured on tenor sax, flute and oboe particularly and occasionally more unusual instruments, with sterling support from many colleagues including Wilbur Harden on flugel and pianists Hugh Lawson, Terry Pollard and Joe Zawinul. avidgroup.co.uk
