SINCE the Sixties, band founder, guitarist and vocalist Syd Barrett was replaced by David Gilmour, who became a mainstay during their 1970s heyday.
Bass player Roger Waters was furious when Floyd reconvened in 1993 without him to record The Division Bell and it was from those sessions that this new - and according to Gilmour, final - Floyd album was created, with guitarist and drummer Nick Mason.
Predominantly instrumental, The Endless River comprises of 18 tracks, with opener Things Left Unsaid eerily using snippets of late keyboardist Rick Wright in conversation.
Gilmour's guitar playing is, as ever, exemplary, but this is not classic Floyd, although a lot better than might have been expected.
As an epitaph for one of Britain's finest bands, it is an eloquent farewell.
