CD REVIEWS: Mark Turner Quartet/Lathe of Heaven (ECM 3780663) Having appeared on several ECM albums this is the tenor player’s first as leader. He’s wonderfully accompanied and indeed stimulated by trumpeter Avishai Cohen, the two voices so well matched. Their long lines solo or together get just the right support from Joe Martin on double bass and Marcus Gilmore. ecmrecords.com
Jochen Rueckert/We Make the Rules (Whirlwind WR4658) Based in New York City since 1995, the drummer and composer has written these pieces with each band member in mind. Tenor player Mark Turner, guitarist Lage Lund and bass player Matt Penman are regular associates and got to know the music on tour before recording, resulting in a thoughtful, cohesive and rather sensitive session. whirlwindrecordings.com
Ezra Weiss Sextet/Before You Know It (Roark 70779) Recorded at a club in Portland, Oregon, this young band – trumpet, alto, tenor, piano, bass and drums – makes a super job of Weiss’ compositions and arrangements. Some are quite extended but never seem too long, there’s such variety both in the background and solos. From his fresh takes on Foggy Day and Coltrane’s Alabama to his own compositions they run the gamut of moods and tempos. ezraweiss.com
