Tre Voci (ECM New Series 481 0880)
The first recording in violist Kim Kashkashian’s trio Tre Voci places the focus on music revolving around Debussy’s 1915 Sonata for flute, viola and harp. The trio, including Italian-American flutist Marina Piccinini and Israeli harpist Sivan Magen, convey the rhapsodic structure of Debussy’s with supreme sensitivity. Takemitsu’s And then I knew ‘twas wind has a shimmering quality, while
Sofia Gubaidulina’s Gardens of Joys and Sorrows is quite transfixing. Highly recommended.
Transeamus: The Hilliard Ensemble (ECM New Series 481 1106)
Having recorded more than 20 acclaimed albums for ECM, the Hilliard Ensemble caps its discography before retirement with this final release. Transeamus is a collection of polyphony, including music from the court of Henry VIII, as well as many of the group’s favourite pieces from this era. To quote tenor David James “The sweet harmonies might appear uncomplicated, but this transparency of sound creates a cumulative effect that is mesmerising." Spot on. A must for all devotees.
