CD REVIEWS: Duke Jordan/ Three Classic Albums Plus (Avid AMSC1145) This is worth getting for the pianist/composer’s two finest albums: Trio & Quartet and Flight to Jordan which also feature Eddie Bert & Cecil Payne and Dizzy Reece & Stanley Turrentine. Four extra tracks with Gigi Gryce plus the soundtrack from Les Liaisons Dangereuses are a welcome bonus.
Phil Woods/Three Classic Albums Plus (Avid AMSC1144) Duke Jordan also appears on one of these albums, but so do a host of others. Donald Byrd and Al Haig on The Young Bloods, Zoot Sims and Al Cohn on two long tracks recorded in New York’s Half Note Club and Cecil Payne on a Charlie Parker Memorial. A string of the finest alto players line up on Bird Feathers to complete this this little capsule of 1950s’ jazz. avidgroup.co.uk
Larry Fuller (Capri 74135-2) Previously known as the pianist with Ray Brown, Ernestine Anderson or John Pizzarelli, this is Fuller’s second album as leader. With particularly sympathetic help from Hassan Shakur and Greg Hutchinson he swings his way through a very enjoyable of standards and jazz classics by Duke Ellington, Clifford Brown and John Lewis among others. A couple of solos complete a thoroughly enjoyable album. caprirecords.com
