CD REVIEWS: Thelonious Monk/ Second Set (Avid AMSC1130) This is a great introduction to Monk’s distinctive music and playing. The three original albums include a super trio set with Art Blakey (and one solo), the expanded tenpiece band live at New York’s Town Hall and a five-piece band where cornettist Thad Jones spurs Charlie Rouse to some of his liveliest playing. As a bonus there’s the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival set featured in Jazz on a Summer’s Day.

Adam Schroeder/Let’s (Capri 74134) Currently a member of the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, baritone saxophonist Schroeder steps up for his second album as leader. With John Clayton on bass and Jeff Hamilton drums, plus the inspiring Anthony Wilson on guitar, he offers some imaginative takes on a thoroughly enjoyable selection of tunes mixing jazz standards and originals.

Stranahan-Zaleski-Rosato/ Limitless (Capri 74130) There seem to be many high-quality piano trios these days and this can be rated with the best with superb individual playing and wonderfully relaxed group interplay. The Brooklyn-based group comprises Colin Stranahan on drums, Glenn Zaleski piano and Rick Rosato bass. Their programme is mostly original including Motian Sickness and Chorale (for Fred Hersch) and a reworking of Monk’s Work. caprirecords.com
