REVIEWS: Berlioz: Harold en Italie (Naxos 8.573297) Leonard Slatkin and the Orchestre National de Lyon present Berlioz’s popular Harold en Italie. The recording features sterling playing by violist Lisa Berthaud. The elegant Reverie et Caprice is his only work for solo violin, played here by Giovanni Radivo. The album is rounded off with the concert overtures Benvenuto Cellini and Le carnaval romain.
Faure: Kungsbacka Piano Trio (Naxos 8.573223) The Kungsbacka Piano Trio perform Gabriel Faure’s lesser-known original version (with clarinet) of the Piano Trio, the Second Piano Quartet, including an evocation of the bells of Cadirac near the composer’s home and Romances sans paroles, as well as the Berceuse from the Dolly Suite. The ensemble are joined by viola player Philip Dukes and clarinetist Richard Hosford. Highly recommended.
JS Bach: Academic Cantatas: Secular Cantatas Vol 4 (BIS2001) The fourth volume of JS Bach’s Secular Cantatas from Bach Collegium Japan and Masaaki Suzuki is accompanied by a stellar line up of soloists including Joanne Lunn, Robin Blaze, Wolfram Lattke, and Roderick William. A top-notch recording.
