CD REVIEWS: Jacob Young/Forever Young (ECM 376 8896). I’ve missed the Norwegian-American guitarist’s two previous ECM albums but have thoroughly enjoyed this one. His playing is mostly subtle but he provides lovely frameworks in his compositions for saxophonist and former schoolfriend Trygve Seim and pianist Marcin Wasilewski’s superb trio with Slawomir Kurkiewicz and Michal Miskiewicz.
Although this combination is new, the musicians have an obvious rapport.
Wolfgang Muthspiel-Larry Grenadier- Brian Blade/Driftwood (ECM 375 6400).
For his ECM debut as leader, guitarist Muthspiel has produced a very thoughtful album, focussing on sound qualities and interaction with his colleagues. He’s recorded with each of them before but it’s their first time as a trio and they do gel well together. The leader’s compositions include tributes to Joe Zawinul and Michael Brecker and on half the album he’s featured on acoustic guitar.
Third Reel (ECM 372 8269). Another debut album, this features Nicholas Masson mostly on tenor saxophone but also on clarinet. Roberto Pianca is on guitar and Emanuele Maniscalco contributes drums. Each of them leads his own group but they regard this cooperative as a priority. Like the other CDs their group feeling and empathy comes across very strongly on 16 varied compositions, many of them quite short with some conversational and others more passionate. ecmrecords.com
