VINYL REVIEWS: The Tubby Hayes Band/BBC Jazz for Moderns (Gearbox Records GB1502) When Gearbox was launched in 2009 these two LPs were among their first issues with the limited editions soon selling out. It’s good to see them reissued when both music and sound are so very good.
Tubby’s Big Band was recorded for BBC World Service in 1962 and, as Simon Spillett’s detailed notes observe, it reveals more of his remarkable talent with some effective writing for his all-star group including Jimmy Deuchar, Keith Christie, Bob Efford and a rhythm section of Gordon Beck, Freddy Logan and Allan Ganley.
Such high quality sound and performance make this a strong recommendation.
Joe Harriott Quintet/Jazz for Moderns (Gearbox GB1503) In another previously unissued broadcast, the alto player’s quintet of 1962 features Shake Keane on trumpet and flugelhorn, Pat Smythe piano, Coleridge Goode bass and Bobby Orr drums. With different versions of three compositions and the only recording of Dizzy Reece’s Variations on Monk this 45rpm, 12”
EP is indeed another lost treasure.
Both LPs have been transferred to 180 gram vinyl and come with a free download code. gearboxrecords.com
