THE ultimate Michael Jackson Tribute show has evolved into a slick beast since I last saw it. The set, lights, choreography and costumes are a fitting homage (without all that nasty controversy) to the late, self-styled King of Pop. The company are super-up-for-it and hell-bent on bringing the audience of mainly MJ disciples with them, even if the repeated ‘How are you feeling Newcastle’s’ reminded me of some enforced therapy session.

The relentless hits are delivered by a team of singers and dancers, the mood is Pop Concert. This is a show suitable for all ages. The kid didn’t quite buy my story that Dirty Diana probably had a soil fixation, or something. The choreography and wild Gal Gladiators for that was breathtaking and hits like Billie Jean and Thriller are stunning and carried off with a platinum swagger. I did want the Earth to swallow me up during the saintly section which culminated in Heal the World though.

Panto elements have sneaked in, from the Singalong ‘Shake your Body’ to the plethora of flashing merchandise via some Bo-Selecta Style ‘Hee-hees’, but with high production values and the dedication of the company, this is the best intro to MJ’s music anyone could have from a Theatre Show.

Of our lead vocalists, Cleopatra Higgins exudes star quality, while Sean Christopher’s dancing - he has the robotics and the moonwalking – is most impressive. Jessica Craft in the ensemble is performing for all its worth and they all seem to be having a blast.

I defy you not to be bustin’ some killer Thriller moves on the way home and it is great to see a show that has evolved through time. Just leave your reality check at home – you won’t be needing that.

Runs until Saturday. For tickets ring 08448 11 21 21 or go to theatreroyal.co.uk
