Ahead of Birtwistle’s 80th birthday in July, ECM presents a range of his little-know chamber music which distils his beguiling soundworld. The 12 settings for soprano and cello of Lorine Niedecker are brilliantly conveyed by Amy Freston and Adrian Brendel.
Bogenstrich – Meditation on a Poem of Rilke derives from song without words composed for the 75th anniversary of Alfred Brendel and is performed by his son Adrian, along with baritone Roderick Williams and pianist Tim Fellner. The works bracket trio for violin cello and piano. A must for devotees.
