REVIEWS: John Casken: Orion over Farne (NMC D189) The North-East’s most distinguished composer John Casken is celebrating his 65th year with his works featured in five concerts at Sage Gateshead, including Subtle Knot to be premiered on June 11. This NMC release features his symphonic poem Orion Over Farne, which draws on the myth, landscape and poetry of the Farne Islands. The Violin Concerto, performed by the young German violinist Sophia Jaffe, takes its narrative from Tolstoy's Father Sergius, reflecting some of the turmoil of human experience. Performed by the Halle, this is a must for devotees and initiates alike.
Mark-Anthony Turnage: Undance (NMC D194) Undance was a project created for Sadler's Wells by Mark-Anthony Turnage and artists Mark Wallinger, inspired by the work of photographic pioneer Eadweard Muybridge. Tunes that emerge throughout the work are framed by edgy syncopation that propel it forward. It is performed by the Undance Band, conducted by Tim Murray. The album includes No Let Up and Crying Out Loud performed by Rambert Orchestra. Highly recommended.
