PAUL Potts (James Corden) is a shy and unassuming man, who lives with his parents in Port Talbot. He works in a Carphone Warehouse shop with his best mate Braddon (Mackenzie Crook), but dreams of becoming an opera singer so he listens to classical music every waking moment – a musical choice which his mother Yvonne (Julie Walters) encourages, but his father Roland (Colm Meaney) derides. New girlfriend Julie-Ann (Alexandra Roach), who he met online, persuades Paul to take his first tentative steps towards realising his ambition by taking part in a local talent show.
One Chance is a life-affirming feelgood tale of triumph over adversity that adds a sheen of sentimentality to the rags-to-riches fairytale of Britain’s Got Talent winner Paul Potts. Corden tugs heartstrings as the overweight, accident-prone, opera obsessive, who has spent years being bullied and finally musters the courage to step into the spotlight.
