REVIEWS: Rossini: The Complete Overtures Vol 4 (Naxos 8.572735) This is the final instalment of what has been a fantastic series showcasing Rossini’s overtures. It includes the farcical comedy Il barbiere di Siviglia, themes of flirtation and disguise found in Il Turco in Italia and the cunning exploits of Le Comte Ory.

These fresh renditions by the Prague Sinfonia Orchestra, conducted by Christian Benda, come highly recommended.

Gliere: Symphony No 3 (Naxos 8.573161) Gliere’s rarely-performed Symphony No 3 Ilya Mouromets by JoAnn Falletta and the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. This vast and challenging work with its enormous instrumental requirements is a masterclass in orchestral scoring and describes the heroic adventures of a legendary folk hero, Ilya Mouromets. Music influenced by the Russian romantic line, with a subtle hint of impressionism. A worthy addition to the discography.

Cresswell, Landscapes of the South etc (Naxos 8.573199) New Zealand’s distinguished composer Lyell Cresswell is well represented on this recording by three examples of his mastery of the orchestral sound world. His Piano Concerto, written in memory of his fellow composer Edward Harper, is performed by Stephen De Pledge.

Rounded off with Landscapes of the Soul and Concerto for Orchestra and String Quartet. Invigorating listening.
