CD REVIEWS: Oscar Peterson/Second Set (Avid AMSC1109) This further collection complements the first admirably with the remaining four tracks from Oscar’s famous Stratford Shakespeare Festival concert. The 2CD set also includes his inspired Porgy and Bess album, an interesting My Fair Lady set and, for contrast, one with a swinging big band as well as three bonus trio tracks from JATP.

Terry Gibbs/Four Classic Albums (Avid AMSC1100) This second set by the vibes player presents him in four different settings: “Swinging” with a big band, playing Duke Ellington (on marimba too) with Pete Jolly on accordion, in a smoother big band on “More Vibes and Velvet” and finally in a quintet in music from Cole Porter’s Can Can.

Needless to say, he swings all the way through.

Red Norvo/Four Classic Albums (Avid AMSC1110) Here’s another showcase displaying Red’s different vibes sound. His challenging Trio sides with Tal Farlow or Jimmy Raney and Red Mitchell are followed by a big band session also featuring singer Helen Humes. A gentler, chamber music set is succeeded by a different big band and four sublime tracks featuring Ben Webster at his very best.
