DEVICE is the new project from Disturbed lead singer David Draiman. With Disturbed taking a break from the business, Draiman has recruited the likes of Serj Tankian, formerly of System of a Down, Rage Against The Machine’s Tom Morello and classic rockers Geezer Butler from Black Sabbath and Deep Purple’s Glenn Hughes for this offering.
“It’s not metal,” says Draiman on the accompanying press spiel and, to a degree, he’s right. It’s more industrial, at times more melodic. But unfortunately, it’s just not different enough from his day job to make it live long in the memory.
As Draiman himself admits, there are nods to industrial pioneers Nine Inch Nails, but instead of moving it on, it’s more like an homage to the genre, debunking his claim that Device is “futuristic rock”. It’s not bad, just a little disappointing.
