RHONA the vet isn’t well in Emmerdale (ITV1). She’s sweating, she’s snappy, she can’t concentrate and she’s throwing up. She’s either pregnant or picked up something through spending much of her working life with her hand up a cow’s bum.

But the Soapland doctor thinks otherwise – she’s been popping too many pills.

Rhona, poor love, is hooked on prescription painkillers. And she’s not the only one. Sharon in EastEnders (BBC1) is in the same position, but more of her later. First, let’s see how Rhona is coping. Not very well, it appears.

With the doctor cutting off her supply of painkillers, she’s caught raiding the veterinary surgery’s medicine cabinet, although if I were her I’d steer clear of the horse tranquillisers and those pills for treating worms.

She’s caught with her hand in the pill box by fellow vet Vanessa. But will she tell Rhona’s hubby Paddy the vet (how many vets do they need in Emmerdale?) or keep quiet. The latter course may not be open to her after Paddy accuses Vanessa of stealing pills and threatening the future of the business.

Over in Walford, EastEnder Sharon’s trembling lips have been temporarily halted.

She’s unconscious after taking another painkiller overdose. Enter Fill the Fug, with whom she is back co-habiting. Coming home to find her lying flat on her back isn’t unusual as she likes to give her man a warm welcome after a hard day at the office of unfair trading.

When she tells him: “I’ve got something hot on the table for you”, she’s not talking about shepherd’s pie. This time, however, there are no words of welcome home as she’s passed out.

Fill is not happy, especially finding baby Lexi playing with a pill bottle by Sharon’s unconscious body. His reaction is swift – he throws Sharon out into the cold.

She might find Lauren lying in the gutter because she’s drunk again. The troubled teen has hit the bottle because of the problem of her parents breaking up and her boyfriend Joey dumping her. Her friends aren’t speaking to her either.

What’s a girl to do except drink, drink and then drink some more. She ends up wasted on the allotments. Waste of alcohol, too, if you ask me.

ALICE may soon be turning to drink as she’s caught in the middle of the tug-oflove between Michael and Janine over baby Scarlett. Michael is using Alice, who’s smitten with him, to get at Janine and even persuades the girl to bring the baby on a secret visit.

Chesney’s a big lad now but having little luck in the romance department in Coronation Street (ITV1). He broke up with Katy, with whom he has a son, Joseph, after she bedded Ryan. Now he wants to prove he’s a man with a capital M.

He starts pumping iron instead of doing the ironing and goes looking for a lay-dee.

Meanwhile, shy Sinead plucks up courage to ask him out on a date but his offhand “yes” hardly makes her think the night out at the Bistro, a restaurant that’s seen more break-ups than most of us have had hot dinners, is going to be a success.

Things come to a head when Ryan and Katy turn up too. Ches wants to show he’s over her and invites Sinead back to his place to see not his etchings but his collection of pork
