ANOTHER week, another trip Down Under with Priscilla for camp followers of the stage version of the movie.

Last time in Sunderland it was Jason Donovan starring.

This time, Noel Sullivan (late of Hear’Say – but don’t hold that against him) is wearing the frock as one of a trio of drag queens following Village People’s advice to Go West by boarding a bus and embarking on a road trip through the Australian Outback.

En route there are blow-outs, bust-ups, bitchy comments, dancing giant cupcakes and a mail order bride who does things with ping-pong balls that will never make it as an Olympic sport.

Sullivan, who’s been beavering away in musical theatre since the end of Popstars-created Hear’Say, is a more-than-adequate replacement for Donovan as Tick. He has a good voice, can walk in heels and handles well the dramatic stuff when Tick meets his young son.

Seeing the show a second time makes me appreciate more the subtlety – not a word normally associated with drag – of Richard Grieve’s grieving Bernadette, who’s not the man she once was. He also delivers some of the killer lines.

Graham Weaver, captures the livelife- to-the-full attitude of the youngest and most impetuous of the trio Adam/Felicia, whose fearlessness boarders on stupidity.

It’s a shame that the size of the theatre means the three divas don’t fly and there are a few more economies here and there.

Most of all, Priscilla is fun – a good time was had by all. The audience were on their feet by the end, demanding the party continued.
