WHAT better way to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Pride and Prejudice than a ball? Of course, back in 1813, when Jane Austen’s much-loved novel was first published, readers would have known exactly how to go about organising such a bash; but in the 21st century, we need a little help.
So, presenters Alistair Sooke and Amanda Vickery have drafted in a team of experts to recreate the Netherfield Ball, the intimate country-house gathering that provides a key turning point in the relationship between Mr Darcy and Elizabeth Bennett.
Instead of putting out bowls of crisps and plugging in an MP3 player, they’ll be talking to food and music historians to get the details just right.
We’ll also find out more about the finer points of Regency fashion, and a makeup artist will put together some authentic cosmetics with which to make up the girls – and some of the boys.
