THE first track on this album, Driftin’ Back, is close to 28 minutes long. Twenty-eight minutes!
I haven’t listened to anything that long since my mam lectured me after finding my stash of uneaten packed lunches in the loft. Unlike on that occasion, Neil Young managed to keep my attention from beginning to end. While I came close to needing a shave by the end, never did it feel like it was being drawn out unnecessarily. There are a number of other highlights, including the reflective Ramada Inn and the country lilt of Twisted Road. Old dogs don’t have to learn new tricks, they can just perfect what they’ve been doing all along.
