A CAMPAIGN to achieve a more secure future for dairy farmers won good support at Northumberland County Show.

More than 500 members of the public and Cumbrian MP Jamie Reed signed up to the Mission Milk campaign, run by the National Farmers’ Union (NFU).

Ten dairy farmers a week quit the sector and the campaign encourages shoppers actively to look for British dairy products in shops.

Queues formed to collect campaign packs from the NFU stand as supporters pledged to track down any dairy products not carrying the British Red Tractor logo.

Dennis Gibb, Ponteland dairy farmer and NFU regional dairy board member, said: “We know we have a lot of public support, but I never expected the response to be so positive at the show where there are so many things to catch the public’s eye.”

The NFU is also urging MPs to back a series of proposals by the European Commission, including better milk contracts and greater transparency on pricing.

Mr Reed, Labour MP for Copeland, pledged his support at the show.

As part of the Shadow Defra ministerial team, he met NFU members and expressed concern for the plight of the dairy sector.
