A BULL called Spooky is cutting a remarkable nine days off the average calving time.

Huddlestone Spooky (pictured) is one of Cogent’s most popular bulls and his ability to reduce the average gestation period by so much is considered “exceptional” in the cattle breeding world Hugh Pocock, of Cogent, said the national average was 284 days – cows inseminated with Spooky’s semen cut that to just 275 days. Mr Pocock said: “So just reducing days open by nine days has the potential to save £45 per cow per lactation, or £4,500 per 100 cows.”

The shorter gestation period also means easier calvings and the lack of health problems associated with difficult ones. Spooky’s calves are described as strong and vigorous which develop into robust, great framed cows.

The list price for Spooky is £18; he is available sexed at £37.
