NOW that the region's oilseed rape harvest is over - with fewer problems than anticipated - growers are now considering what to sow for next year's harvest.
Peter Collins, seed manager at Farmway, said for those unsure the Home Grown Cereals Authority (HGCA) had published its 2007 trial results.
The initial results show Catana had performed well and, while its results from northern trial sites were still outstanding, Mr Collins said it is known to perform better in northern climes.
He believes it may top the HGCA list for gross output.
Lioness had again performed well, with a high oil content, and Kalif had produced a high gross output coupled with superb all-round disease resistance, making it a new variety to consider.
Mr Collins said anyone whose sowing date was traditionally late August to early September - but who knows the field is likely to face a challenge - should consider hybrid varieties, as early season vigour would help them get established. Farmway has Hornet and Excalibur, and all other top performing varieties, available for immediate delivery.
