A SCHEME that focuses on investment in green energy technology has been recognised with a national award.

The Alternative Energy Grant, operated by Durham County Council in the Wear Valley area, is unique to the region.

The scheme aims to encourage individuals and businesses to invest in renewable energy technology and increase accredited microrenewable installers.

It received the Renewable Energy Association runnerup award for the Best Renewable Energy Region in the British Renewable Energy Awards.

Workers also find funding and provide financial incentives to customers.

Ian Bloomfield, environment officer with the council, said: “Tackling the financial demands of the scheme and the availability of suitably qualified installers to meet its delivery were key factors in its success.

“A framework of suppliers across all renewable technologies has been established across the county, which has seen prominent growth within the last few years and already highlighted Durham as an area with varied renewable energy expertise.”

An awards spokesman said: “After declaring their commitment to climate change, Durham County Council’s Wear Valley district and housing partner, Dale and Valley Homes, have sought to introduce the take-up of renewable energy devices in the rural community, with many households off the gas network benefiting from the scheme.”
