NORTHERN Rock has appointed a new human resources (HR) director.
Richard Smelt, who was previously HR director of Carphone Warehouse, will join the now nationalised bank on September 15.
Last night, the bank described his appointment as "another important step" under its business plan being piloted by city troubleshooter and executive chairman Ron Sandler.
Mr Smelt has spent more than 20 years in HR management and led a programme of major change in his previous post.
Mr Sandler said: "I am delighted that Richard will join us as HR director. The company is going through a major restructuring exercise and his considerable HR expertise will be invaluable as we move forward.
"His appointment further strengthens our executive team and illustrates the level of importance we place on HR management within the company.
"It demonstrates that Northern Rock continues to attract the right calibre of people to help take the business forward."
