A BUTCHER who bought the business where he had been employed since his schooldays is looking to expand its services.
John Stirk bought the business, in Stockton Terrace, Grangetown, where he started working as a Saturday boy nine years ago, last October.
The 24-year-old is planning to expand Stirk’s Family Butchers to include a home delivery service.
Mr Stirk said: “I started here as a Saturday boy when I was at school, working on weekends and during school holidays.
Over the course of ten years I’ve grown to know the business and trade inside out.
“The previous owner, Graeme, is still working here, and he’s a big part of what we do. I’m grateful to him for his guidance, selling me the business and giving me this huge opportunity.”
The new delivery service will allow customers to order via the internet.
Mr Stirk said: “We know that a lot of our potential customers are busy young people who may work full time and not have the ability to visit the shop.”
Mr Stirk received startup assistance and ongoing support from the North- East Business and Innovation Centre through business advisor Chris Craig.
Mr Craig said: “The real challenge for modern butchers lies in bringing traditional meat back to people’s tables.
“John is taking an inspired and innovative approach to a traditional business.”
