THE life and times of a miner who was fond of writing have been recalled in a book on his life by his daughter.
Gordon MacPherson, of Easington Colliery in County Durham, died in 1999 aged 70 from emphysema and chronic bronchitis Fight to the Finish, published by Northern Voices Community Projects, tells his life story and includes stories and poetry he wrote about his life.
Mr MacPherson’s daughter, Heather Wood, said: "Not just because it was my Dad’s poems but I felt that mining history needs to be remembered.
"The best way, the truest way would be from the people who lived through it. There are so many people who write books about mining but have never been in a mine.’’ Mrs Wood said that her father wrote poetry about significant events in his life, including the 1984-85 Miners Strike.
She added that that 700 copies of the book had been produced and that interest in it was strong.
A launch event was held in Durham City yesterday (WedJan19) following one held at Easington Colliery WMC.
Easington’s Labour MP Grahame Morris has described Mr MacPherson as an "inspiration’’.
`The book costs £5, plus £2.50 postage, and is available from Northern Voices Community Projects on 0191-252 9531 or from Mrs Woods on 0191-527 0371.
