SUNDERLAND has become the national hotspot for entrepreneurial spirit, a study has revealed.

The Royal Mail’s business start-up barometer reveals the city is leading the UK in the number of new businesses established in the six months to the end of August, when 125 businesses were created, a 20 per cent rise on the previous six months. The figures puts Sunderland well ahead of a national 13 per cent increase for the same period.

Print business VIP Portraits, LG Inventories and HoneyBeez Childcare are among ventures to spring up in the city supported by initiatives like Sunderland Council’s Just the Job programme.

Councillor Paul Watson, Leader of Sunderland City Council, said: “Sunderland continues to attract business, with more than 8,000 jobs created in the last seven years, capital investment totalling more than £1.5bn and more inward investment than any other location in the North-East.”
