A WOMAN who has suffered from anorexia and depression has now set up a business to help others overcome such illnesses.
Mother-of-two Katherine Johnson, a qualified counsellor, has set up Counselling 4 U to help patients suffering with trauma, depression, eating disorders, alcohol and drug addiction, bereavement and marital problems.
The business is based in Willington, County Durham, and is the only private counseling practice in the area.
Ms Johnson said: “I offer a confidential and personal service to each individual. I know how hard it is to open up about your problems, having suffered with long-term depression and anorexia nervosa myself.
“There is a massive stigma attached to having a mental health problem, as if having one makes you a crazy person, but we live in the 21st Century and no one should have to live with these kinds of problems.”
She has been helped to set up Counselling 4 U with funding and support from Be Enterprising, Durham County Council’s Local Enterprise Growth Initiative (LEGI) programme.
Michael Smith, Ms Johnson’s Be Enterprising coach, said: “Katherine has spent many hours on the other side of the desk, receiving support, so she knows what patients gain from counselling sessions.
“She also understands that each patient is unique. This is why I am confident that her business will be a success.”
