A KEY figure at one of the North-East’s companies has been sworn in as president of the North-East Chamber of Commerce (NECC).

Martyn Pellew, development director of PD Ports, brings a wealth of experience to the role of president of NECC, the region’s leading business organisation, following the retirement of Richard Bottomley.

Mr Pellew has commanded respect at both regional and national levels after masterminding the lobbying effort for the £300m deep sea Northern Gateway Container Terminal at PD-owned Teesport.

The role of NECC president will see Mr Pellew meet Government ministers and senior business figures during the next few months as he ensures the views of the NECC’s 4,500 members are heard.

Mr Pellew, who has been NECC’s Tees Valley committee chairman for the past three years, said: “It is a huge privilege to take over this role from Richard Bottomley, who has done a fantastic job. The great strength of NECC lies in the fantastic businesses throughout the region which commit to it.

“It’s more important than ever that our business community works together to get through the downturn and prepare for the recovery.”

He takes over from Mr Bottomley who retires as president after 18 months in the role. Highlights of Mr Bottomley’s tenure include the recent trip to China to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the Harbin Federation of Industry and Commerce, and meeting Prime Minister Gordon Brown in Downing Street to press the measures needed to protect the North-East economy.

“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time as president, meeting with Government ministers and senior business people in the public and private sectors,” said Mr Bottomley.

“I know that Martyn will do a great job representing the members at all levels.”
