HOT cross bun sales helped North-East bakers Greggs enjoy a bumper Easter.
Customers snapped up more than 2.3 million hot cross buns, the company said yesterday.
Newcastle-based Greggs, which has more than 1,400 shops across the UK, said sales of the traditional Easter bun soared ten per cent compared with last year. The strong demand helped like-for-like sales increase two per cent in the 19 weeks to May 9, which marks an improvement on the one per cent growth earlier in the year, after heavy snow affected sales.
Greggs said it was also benefiting from lower energy costs, which were helping offset continuing increases in ingredient prices.
The group is part-way through a television advertising push, launched last month to capitalise on its value for money offering as consumers cut back.
