COMPANIES dealing with hazardous goods can learn more about legislation that comes into force in the summer at an event in the region.

From July 1, any individual or company that handles or transports hazardous goods will be required to complete paperwork that details exactly what they are carrying and who they are carrying it for.

The regulations also widen the range of materials that can be classified as hazardous and puts the onus for responsibility onto the carrier rather than the consignor of the goods.

One of the main changes to the Europewide legislation is the introduction of a generic Trem card that outlines information about all hazardous goods.

Billingham-based haulage company Nicholson’s Transport is hosting a free seminar in Billingham with leading industry experts on Tuesday, May 19, to make everyone aware of the new regulations and their legal obligations.

David Nicholson, managing director of Nicholson’s Transport, said: “We are holding this workshop because we want people to fully understand the new legislation and what it means to them. There has been confusion about new regulations, particularly around the Trem cards, but we aim to give people the information they need.”

The workshop will be led by Ali Karim, founder of the Hazchem Network and a leading expert on the handling and transport of hazardous goods. He will be joined by Peter Harris, an independent dangerous goods safety advisor.
