A STUDENT who set up a firm to help US tourists trace their Irish roots has won a university business award.

Howard Kingston founded Irish Ancestral Holidays after spending summer holidays working in the field.

Now the Durham University student has triumphed in the final of the university’s student business planning competition.

Twelve student-founded firms competed for the prize, with the winner announced at a black-tie dinner at St Chad’s College.

The runner up was StuRents. The company, founded by Michael Rainsford and Matthew Heap, allows landlords and letting agents to advertise their properties to prospective student tenants.

As the overall university winner, Mr Kingston received a trophy, certificates and £1,500.

His project will go forward to the regional final, which will be held in October, competing against entries from the universities of Newcastle, Northumbria, Sunderland and Teesside.
