SKILLS and training in the workplace were top of the agenda when a Government minister came the region earlier this week.
John Denham, UK Secretary of State for Innovation, Universities and Skills, heard from North-East Confederation of British Industry (CBI) members about the broad range of approaches they are taking to improve the skills of their workforce.
Issues raised included developing strong apprenticeship schemes and business-university collaborations, working with colleges of further education to accredit employer designed programmes and encouraging students to study science and engineering.
Alison O'Connor, human resources director at Arriva and chairwoman of CBI North-East HR directors group, said: "It (the event) was a great opportunity to explore gaining accreditation for employer in-house training schemes with the minister. We are committed to continuing our efforts and to providing a workplace in which our employees can flourish."
