AN energy assessing company is preparing for a surge in growth with the introduction of new legislation later this month for people looking to sell their homes.
Darlington-based Idea Limited, run by husband-and-wife team Angelina and Alun Bell, plans to help sell thousands of properties across the region as Home Information Packs (Hips) are phased in and energy performance certificates form a compulsory part of selling a home.
Under new rules, properties on the market with four or more bedrooms must have a Hip.
From Monday, those selling three bedroom homes must also have a Hip, meaning 80 per cent of sellers will need an energy efficiency rating.
Mr and Mrs Bell, both qualified domestic energy assessors, are expecting significant business growth.
Mrs Bell said: "The idea of the energy performance certificate is that, at a glance, would-be buyers will be able to see the property's energy efficiency.
"It will kill two birds with one stone - providing information for homebuyers and ensuring the UK complies with an EU directive to reduce carbon emissions, which comes into force in 2009."
Jonathan Barnes, from Business Link North-East, who helped the couple set up the venture, said: "The pair are really switched on to the changes in the property market and, with their focus and drive, I'm sure that Idea Limited will succeed.
"As the business looks to grow, I look forward to working with the team through its recruitment, operations and training processes."
